MUMBY (Mumbile Clarisse) is an artist born and raised in Antwerp, Belgium. Working primarily through figurative painting, her work centers on the way Black figures occupy space.
She works from photographic imagery she produces or collects, often referencing archival imagery from the 1970s to the early 2000s. Gestures and movement influenced by her Congolese roots also remain central to her work.
Her paintings focus on how leisure, style, movement and collective presence can become ways of asserting visibility and space. She explores the shifting relationships between figures within a composition where movement often appears suspended. Exaggerated postures and elongated figures amplify theatrical presence, while carrying emotional tension through the body.
She studied Visual Arts at Sint-Lucas in Ghent and has since developed her practice through exhibitions and collaborations in Brussels and Paris.
